Hey, I bought this banjo about three years ago from a small used instrument shop, and all I know about it is that it's an Alvarez banjo. I've searched all over and I can't find a serial or model number anywhere on the instrument (even after taking the resonator off), and I'm thinking of selling it to buy something lighter and softer, but I'd like to know a little more about it before I decide on a price or whether to sell it at all. I've also looked at images of various Alvarez banjos and I've never found one exactly like it. Some of the inlay looks similar to the Denver Belle, but there are some small differences that make me think it could be something different. Anyway, I'd really appreciate it if you'd let me know if you might know anything about it! Thanks!

A BHO member posted photos of a '77 catalog. Your banjo looks like a 4300 'Denver Belle'. Note that the peghead inlay on the one on the left in the photo is like yours while that on the right is different. (?) There were only 2 models in '77 with carved heels and the other was an archtop.

The Belle was next to the top of the line, retailing at $585.00. Here are two cuts of the 'Denver Belle'. (BTW. the description mentions a built in 5th string capo. I don't see one on yours and I don't see one in their illustration.)

There appear to be 2 on eBay.. one of each peghead design.. the one that seems to be like yours is:

Both listings are asking $1200.00 'Buy It Now'. Taken 3 full game download.

DATING GUITARS AND MANDOLINS
BY REFERENCE OF SERIAL NUMBERS

Serial numbers can be useful in determining the year of manufacture of a guitar or amp.
But due to incomplete registrations and illogical serial numbers, its history is often unclear.
With the help of the serial number decoder, tables and instructions are the year and location
of the largest well-known brands.

  • Gretsch serials

  • Jackson serials

  • Squier serials

  • Potentiometer codes
Looking up the year of manufacture of a guitar or amplifier(Fender) is based on the format of the serial number of that brand. Each brand has its own coding method that has changed regularly over the years. As a result, certain brands have the same serial numbers, but with a different coding method, which creates overlaps. There are also brands that repeat a serial number every decade.
Then the external characteristics of the guitar are important to place the dating in the correct decade. Connoisseurs and specialists, who can be found in the various guitar forums, can help you with this.

With no (or unreadable) serial numbers, the electronic parts of an electric guitar also give an indication.
For example, the production code of the potentiometers can give an indication about the year of manufacture
of the guitar.
